The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is the voice of the architectural profession, dedicated to serving its members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built environment. Since 1857, the AIA has represented the professional interests of America’s architects. Since 1914, the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects has represented the professional interests of more than 2,000 architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners in design in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Membership in the AIA offers a vast pool of resources to help you compete in today’s market and keeps you informed of critical professional issues that may challenge your success. To become a member, select your membership category from among the following descriptions.

Associate Member (Assoc. AIA)
Assoc. AIA is open to individuals who meet one of the following criteria: Learn More!
• Recent graduate with a degree in architecture
• Currently enrolled in the Intern Development Program (IDP) and working towards licensure
• Currently work under the supervision of an architect and hold a degree in architecture
• Faculty member in a university program in architecture

Allied Member
Virginia Society AIA Allied Membership is open to all affiliated professionals, service providers and product representatives of the building and design fields. Current allied members include attorneys; commercial lenders; consulting engineers; contractors; construction managers, supervisors and documents coordinators; distributors; estimators; facility engineers and managers; field engineers; government officials; insurance professionals; interior designers; product and manufacturing representatives; real estate developers; and specifiers. Allied Members are professionals who contribute to and benefit from Virginia's dynamic design and construction industry. VSAIA Allied Members enjoy the following benefits:
• Networking opportunities with architects and industry leaders.
• Publications that keep members apprised of events, issues and trends in the building community, including Inform and the bimonthly News, which announces all new members.
• Directory of Virginia architecture firms and AIA members - plus recognition as an Allied Member in this annual directory.
• Discounts on Architecture Exchange East registration, purchase of code books and AIA contract documents, and advertisements in the Architecture Exchange East program.
• Invitations to special events such as the annual Visions for Architecture awards gala and Virginia Center for Architecture exhibition receptions.
• Use of the term "Allied Member, Virginia Society AIA," on promotional and advertising materials. (Allied Members may not use the AIA logo.)
